I know, I know, I’m harping on about it a bit.
But I thought it might be a good idea to update you all as to what I’m doing volunteer wise as everything kicks off tonight.
So, back in August I had my main training session with The Pack at Twickenham, which was followed by an on site one at the City of Manchester Stadium. What I’ve been keeping to myself a little is what I’m going to be doing.
On 10 October there is a single Rugby World Cup match being held in Manchester. England versus Uruguay. I will be at the City of Manchester Stadium. Indeed I will be inside the building.
In fact I will be on the pitch.
I am one of the sole volunteers with access to almost everywhere – because I’m an Assistant Floor Manager. I will be working with members of the staff to get the pundits, mascots, performers and teams on and off the pitch at the right times. To say I’m excited would be an understatement. I mean, I’m not only on the pitch, but I get to wear a headset.
Now, I’m not saying I’m going to be Monica Geller as a wedding planner in Friends, BUT….
Maybe just a teeny bit.
But that’s all in October. For now, as of today, England will face their first match tonight, and it’s touted as an easy one. This of course, is the curse of supporting any team. It might be an easy match on paper, but until it’s actually played, you can’t be 100% certain.
Still, I might be a little excited and already have snaffled a new England rugby shirt for the occasion. This indeed is my outfit of the day. I may be a little excited.
I may also have raided Sainsbury’s for some goodies for my desk.
I’m like a child.
So while I wait to be the person in a neon yellow hat running around on the pitch trying to remember what I’ve got to do and not get distracted by the game, I’ll be wearing this (a lot) and possibly throwing my squidgy rugby ball down the corridor at work.
(That’s a lie, I won’t be throwing said ball around as health and safety would kill me.)
So, whoever you’re supporting, whatever your team, good luck.
