So, this summer never really happened. I keep hoping it’s going to perk up for autumn, as is sometimes the case when it’s all a bit grey and damp. But I can almost smell autumn in the air, and I’m already unpacking my knee boots and woolly tights in readiness.
So we’ve all had to make do. Some of us have disappeared to sunnier climes to try and get a shot of vitamin D that way. Others have resorted to tablet form, and making summer happen as best we can. Finding summery things to do, despite the cloud overhead and rain sodden feet.
Bella Italia have jumped in to help. From now until 3rd September they’re bringing La Notte Rosa – the Pink Festival – from Rimini to our shores. If admittedly on a slightly more modest scale than fireworks and midnight and dawn shoreside concerts.
But pink is very much present in every element of this celebration. The restaurants and the staff have been swathed in blush shades, and even the windows can’t escape – with pink lighting in the windows.
The menu too is distinctly flush.
Taking the opportunity to sip all things pink, the Watermelon Cooler (both Virgin and Absolut versions) are light, sweet and refreshing, both using a specially developed watermelon and cucumber syrup.
Food includes Antipasti Rosa – Capocollo salami and pachino tomatoes with basil pesto, Pizza Rosa Coppa – salami with buffalo mozzarella and pesto (vegetarian options are available).
Perhaps my favourite was the watermelon salad with goats cheese and salami. An idea I may have, er, borrowed for my office lunches.
OK, so it may not quite be the Rimini Coast in July. But with vegan, veggie, gluten free options, and something for the kids, they might just offer a little something summery in amongst grey skies and rain for even the fussiest of eaters.
